Teacher of English
The Governors of this outstanding Grammar School wish to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic teacher of English for September 2017. The post can be full time or part time (around 0.7-0.8). The ability to teach A-level English is essential and candidates who have experience teaching English Language at A-level will have a distinct advantage. A strong degree in English is ideally sought although candidates with a degree in a closely-related discipline are welcome to apply. This post would suit a newly-qualified practitioner for whom extensive support and encouragement will be given.
The English department is one of the largest in the School and is housed in a suite of rooms adjacent to the Sixth Form Centre, where most A-level lessons are taught. Students achieve outstanding results at GCSE and A-level. All students study English Language and Literature to GCSE. Four x 50 minute periods are taught per week in all year groups with the GCSE course starting in Year 9. At A-level, the department offers English Literature, English Language and Film Studies with 2-3 classes of each English discipline and 1 or 2 classes of Film being the norm. All sixth form classes are split between two teachers and there is flexibility within the team to teach areas of personal interest.
At A-level, we teach AQA English Language, EDUQAS English Literature and EDUQAS Film Studies. A number of colleagues are examiners/markers for these examination boards. Results in the first round of AS English Language were ALPS grade 2; an excellent achievement in a new specification.
The English department has close links with the School Library and our full time Librarian contributes to the Y7 enrichment reading programme. One lesson per week in Year 7 is given to reading for purpose and for pleasure. Regular visits by local and national authors enhance students’ enrichment. The department also organises Debating and Film Clubs.
West Kirby Grammar School is a very successful selective girls’ school with a small number of boys in the Sixth Form. There are around 1215 students on roll and 98% of students gained 5A*-C including English and Maths in 2016. In 2016, our Progress 8 score was the highest of any Wirral school in 2016. The school P8 score was 0.47 with a figure of almost 0.6 in English, making it the top performing department. The results for students with SEN have been significantly positive for many years and the department prides itself on the inclusivity and accessibility of its curriculum.
Further information and an application form are available to download below. A completed application form and letter addressing the content of the person specification, which should be no longer than two sides of A4, should be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org for the attention of Mrs A Duffy, Headteacher.
