Sixth Form Summer Work
In preparation for your AS courses in September, you are required to complete work for each of your AS subjects. This work will be introduced to you on our Introduction Day (4 July).
Please download the work from the website (links at the bottom of this page). Some subjects require you to print off the work. For others, it is a series of instructions/tasks for you to read and then write your own response.
The work should be completed before lessons start in September.
This work is compulsory. It will be assessed in lessons and/or through teacher marking in the first couple of lessons in September.
Also don't forget to register for Sixth Form once you have your GCSE results on Thursday 24 August. External students are welcome at WKGS from midday. Internal students should register as soon as they have their results.
Also - one of our enrichment options is a Pre-Driving course. If you want to know more, please download a letter by clicking here
Here are the answers to some questions about Summer Work....
What if I change course after my GCSE results?
If you want to explore a change in A-level course after results or because you didn't meet the entry criteria, your (new) teacher(s) will set you a deadline to complete the summer work, perhaps a few days after the rest of the students. Also, remember, you are welcome to explore a change of subject with Mr Scott (Deputy Head), but only if the combination of subjects works on the timetable and there is sufficient space for you to join the course.
What if I can't download the work?
All the work is in PDF, Word or Powerpoint format. Use this link if you don't have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. It is an internationally used package and costs nothing to install.
What if I can't print the work?
If you genuinely cannot print the work off through not having access to a printer, it is often possible to print work at the local library, for which a charge is often made. Failing that, current WKGS students can come into school to print off the work. Students from other schools who are joining WKGS and don't have access to a printer are welcome to contact Mr Scott via email (email@example.com) before 15th July and he will arrange for a copy to be printed and left at Reception for you to collect by 21st July.
What if I don't do the work?
Completing the work is a requirement for joining the A-level course. All teachers will be asked to put a grade onto the school database in the first half term to show how well you have settled into / adapted to the A-level course and the quality of the summer work you completed. This grade will be reported to parents around October Half Term.
If I still need to ask anything...
Some subjects have a direct email link to the Lead Teacher/Head of Department on their work for queries. Failing that, email Mr Scott (firstname.lastname@example.org) and he will endeavour to answer any queries you may have.
The Summer Work is designed to get you thinking about the courses you have chosen, to provide some background to a topic/topics that you are likely to study at AS level and to bridge the gap between GCSE and A level. There is a much greater emphasis on independent study in the Sixth Form and this requires motivation. The Summer Work is designed to motivate you over the (long!) summer break to get back into the swing of school life and to (hopefully) make you thirsty for more knowledge in your chosen courses.
Good luck with the Summer Work and see you in September.
Mrs Noble (Head of Sixth Form)
Mr Scott (Deputy Headteacher)
