Sixth form Roscoe lecture with Jeremy Paxman
On the 27th March 2017 a group of 9 sixth form students accompanied by Mr Robinson attended a lecture by the TV presenter, author and host of University Challenge, Jeremy Paxman. This event was part of Liverpool John Moores University Roscoe lecture series which have presented some big names in the past such as John Bercow, Speaker of the House of Commons and Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England. The lecture that we attended was open to both history and politics students and was entitled Great Britain's Great War: How the First World War changed everything. The lecture covered topics ranging from the effects of propaganda encouraging soldiers to enlist right through to the devastating effects of the Great War on both Europe and the rest of the world. The lecture concluded with a Q and A session which was both informative and entertaining. Recently, the Guardian posed the question ‘has Jeremy Paxman gone soft?’ this was clearly not the case during the Question and Answer session in which his cutting and witty remarks towards the audience, left us all amused.
Overall, it was a great experience to be able to hear Jeremy Paxman speak about such an interesting topic and we all look forward to many more lectures held by John Moores University. We even got a quick group ‘selfie’ with the man himself!
