Sixth Form Curriculum
Advanced Level Reform A-levels are changing. The Government is reforming the way A-levels are structured. The AS qualification will be a standalone and will not form part of the A-level assessment. The AS marks will no longer count towards the Advanced level qualification.
All the A-level examinations will take place at the end of the two year course.
The Government has decided that this reform will take place at two phases. Not all subjects will change at once.
By September 2016, most subjects will have converted to the new style of assessment except: Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Government & Politics, Film Studies, Technology and Health & Social Care. Students in Year 12 (2016-17) are studying four subjects with at least one subject's AS examinations at the end of Year 12.
For September 2017, WKGS will allow students to study THREE or FOUR subjects. If students take four subjects, they will be asked, after Parents Evening in January, which subject they intend to complete to AS only. Students will then sit this subject in June of Year 12 before proceeding to Year 13 with three options. It will be possible to continue with all four subjects, if desired, but we recommend most students cease studying the fourth subject at the end of Year 12.
For able mathemticians, Further Maths can be taken as a fourth or fifth subject choice.
We are the first school on the Wirral to offer the Cambridge Pre-U. It is a compulsory enrichment course in the Sixth Form and is a programme which is highly regarded by the Russell Group universities. It is a skills based course which prepares students for study as university and the work place. Focusing on global issues it is designed to enable thinking and reasoning skills in issues of global importance.
The Sixth Form Curriculum is further enriched with Work Experience, Careers, Study Skills and Private Study.
If a student joins us mid-year or does not take the Y12 Pre-U course, they will complete an AQA Extended Project qualification in Year 13.
