All Sixth Form students at West Kirby Grammar School are role models and the development of leadership skills and responsibility are a real strength of our Sixth Form. All students, including those new to School, have an opportunity in the Spring Term of Year 12 to become Prefects; a system which operates fairly and democratically.
All Prefect positions are assigned on the basis of a vote made by both the student and staff body. The Head Prefect, and her two Deputies, are then selected through an application and interview process. This Head Prefect team undertake duties in a range of areas including assisting the Senior Leadership Team with assemblies, parents evenings, open days and presentation evenings.
The Head Prefect Team are well supported by five Senior Prefects who, working closely with the Director of Sixth Form and Assistant Head of Sixth Form, assist with the day-to day running of school life. Each Senior Prefect has a ‘duty day’ and runs a team of approximately ten additional Prefects. It is their role to help staff who are on duty in the Dining Room and around the school at break and lunchtime.
The Prefect system operates in all areas of life at West Kirby Grammar School from sporting and music activities within the six Houses, running the Sixth Form Council, organising charity and social events and helping new students to become well integrated into our school community. For the first time this year, each Senior Prefect has taken on their own wider school project which so far has included a staff versus student charity football match, gathering articles for a school newspaper and organising a school gardening club for younger students.
