Modern Languages is a large and thriving department. Staff are specialists in at least one language, and share their enthusiasm in the classroom, using target language to immerse students in French Spanish and German, a variety of digital and audio materials, and creativity to encourage student communication and interaction. Students enjoy working with foreign language assistants and we also run extra-curricular activities, for example Year 7 French Club and Key Stage 3 German Conversation Club.
Students all currently study French in Year 7, two lessons per week and take 2 x ten week blocks of German and Spanish. In Year 8 two lessons of French are studied along with two of Spanish, German or Latin. In Year 9, students have three lessons each in their two languages. Students in Key Stage 4 study at least one language, and we currently offer Italian to a small group of able linguists as their third language.
AS and A-level courses are offered in French, Spanish and German.
We encourage students to use their language skills abroad, and trips offered recently include a Year 8 trip to Normandie, a Year 9 visit to Barcelona, the German exchange, a Christmas Market visit to Bremen and a cross-curricular trip with History to Berlin.
