Making an IMPACT in DT
Our latest Impact Day (WKGS's name for PSHE days when the timetable is collapsed for the whole school) involved groups of students working in specific curriculum areas.
Year 7s worked in Design Technology and wrote poems about their "journey" so far at WKGS on coloured card before weaving them into a basket. They then spent time looking at environmental issues and biodegradable materials. Finally they designed and made a means of attaching their basket to a helium balloon before releasing them high into the sky above West Kirby.
Our students said:
"Today was one of my favourite days in year 7 so far. We first wrote out a poem about our journey from primary school to WKGS. We wrote these on coloured strips which we then weaved and turned into a basket. We then attached a balloon (latex- biodegradable) using cotton thread and art straws. We then let them go! We were allowed to do this as all of the materials we used were bio-degradable." J Bodey 7K
"I loved D&T today because we did many different things. Making the balloon basket and the balloon attachment was fun because we learned many different techniques which are important for D&T. It was also nice putting poems on it, this resembled putting the past behind us and looking forward towards the future. Don't forget the balloon games that was the best bit!" E Fludger 7Y
