Head of Department: Mrs F Conway
The Latin department at West Kirby Grammar School is a thriving and flourishing part of the school consisting of two experienced subject specialists, who share their enthusiasm and passion for the subject with their students.
At Key Stage 3, students can choose to study Latin as a second language for four lessons each fortnight in Year 8 and 5 lessons per fortnight in Year 9. Not only do students have the opportunity of studying the Latin language, its impact upon English and its similarities with modern languages, but they are also able to learn about the Roman Empire and the legacy which it has left for the present day.
At Key Stage 4, students can choose to study GCSE Latin, a choice which has become increasingly popular with 38 students studying Latin in Year 11. The examination course incorporates a diverse range of skills including Latin translation and comprehension, Roman Civilisation and study of literature. The examination board which the department follows is Eduqas.
Students who study Latin achieve highly in public examinations: 100% of students achieved A* - C at GCSE in 2017 and at A level we have achieved 100% A* - B for the last 5 years.
The department uses eLearning resources to enhance teaching and learning, including iTV technology, designated websites for use with the course and apps to help with vocabulary learning.
We offer visits to enrich our curriculum including trips to Rome and the Bay of Naples and Chester in order to experience Roman sites at first hand.
