Know Your Granite from Basalt!
Starting with a look at some very sparkly crystals we will learn how to identify the most common minerals from gold to quartz. This knowledge is then used to understand the main types of igneous rocks – these are rocks that have cooled down from liquid magma, either above the surface (as lava) or deep in the earth. This will show you why a volcano erupting in Japan, Italy or mainland USA is more likely to kill you than one in Iceland or Hawaii.
You will look at rocks that have been left behind by rivers, glaciers, deserts and the sea, the sedimentary rocks and those affected by being squashed or heated – the metamorphic rocks. While doing this there should be time to look at the occasional fossil or two.
Students might want to bring a few of their favourite samples to hopefully identify.
