Head of Computing
Head of Computing
MPS/UPS + TLR2a or TLR2b dependent upon experience
From 1 September 2017
Responsible to: Deputy Headteacher
The Governors of this outstanding Grammar School wish to appoint a Head of Computing for September 2017 upon the retirement of the current post holder.
The department is staffed by a full time Head of Department and a very enthusiastic and experienced second teacher of Computing (0.6 FTE) who teaches in all key stages. Computing is taught throughout the School. A-level Computing is present on the Year 12 and Year 13 curriculum with a small group of 4 students taking the course in its first year but a larger number have opted for September 2017. At GCSE, we have two teaching groups in each year (WKGS has a three year GCSE programme with GCSE courses starting in Year 9). Class sizes are between 15-25 typically. Last year at GCSE, almost half of our first cohort of 11 students achieved an A* with 82% A*-B and 100% A*-C.
In KS3, students have 1 x 50 minute lesson a week. They primarily use Python but experience other programming languages. They study data representation using sound, text and images. Students study pseudocode and alogrithms and HTML.
At GCSE, there are 5 periods a fortnight of 50 minutes and we follow the OCR course. Students have some flexibility in their chosen programming language.
The department has two teaching rooms; one was fully refurbished in 2016 and the second will have brand new computers and an iTV for September 2017. There are additional bookable ICT rooms for cross curricular ICT usage. The whole school site is wireless and the infrastructure was fully upgraded in 2015. It is very reliable and overseen by a very capable Network Manager and Network Technician.
There is considerable scope to develop and enrich student experience in Computing. Many of our girls are interested in coding and we would like the successful post holder to develop extra-curricular opportunities, links with industry and competitions both local and national. This is a wonderful opportunity for a well-qualified, enthusiastic and driven colleague to make their mark on a highly valued subject of great potential in our grammar school setting. Colleagues who have one or two years experience teaching are equally welcome to apply as those with considerably more experience.
West Kirby Grammar School achieved the highest Progress 8 score of any Wirral school in 2016, which places us in the top 5% of schools nationally. We fully embrace the idea of an all-round education where academic performance in the classroom is just as important as opportunities beyond it.
Please complete the application form fully and return it by the closing date, along with a letter outlining your experience and why you feel you are a suitable candidate for the role, to Mrs A Duffy, Headteacher via firstname.lastname@example.org.
